Frequently Asked Questions, Part 2

5. Q. Can your solar collectors function and produce hot water in cold temperatures?
A. Although performance is greatly reduced in extreme cold, Viessmann collector can function in temperatures as low as -30oC. Excellent heat output is still achieved in mild to moderate sub-zero conditions.

6. Q. How do I protect my solar system during subzero temperatures?
A. If your solar system operates in conditions where the temperature drops below zero for extended periods of time, then freeze protection is for your system must be implemented. The surest method of freeze protection is to use a controller with a low temperature setting, so when the manifold temperature drops below a certain pre-set temperature (5-40oF), the pump will begin to circulate, heating the collector with water from the bottom of the storage tank. The pump will operate periodically, depending how cold it is outside. A glycol/water mix may be used in a closed loop system in extremely cold locations.

7. Q. What is the next course of action if one of the solar tubes is damaged?
A. Let me start by stating that our solar tubes are very strong and extremely durable, and they rarely become damaged. That being said, if one or more of the tubes becomes damaged, then they can be replaced very easily. They are inexpensive and TJ's Radiant Heat are established distributors and installers of solar systems and collectors. If one or more of the tubes is damaged, the system will still collect heat. Of course the system functioning will decrease with damages tubes, so the broken one should be replaced right away.

8. Q. Can our solar collectors be mounted on a flat roof or a flat surface?
A. Yes, of course. Our collectors may be mounted on a flat roof or the ground using a stainless steel Flat Roof Frame. The collector should be mounted at a minimum 25o angle to ensure optimal heat absorption.

9. Q. Are there any hazards to our solar collectors during dry, hot weather?
A. No. Our solar collectors are resistant to high temperatures from damage. The Viessmann solar collector's components are all high temperature rated and non-flammable so that even under the hottest conditions the system will not spark or catch fire. Our collectors are comprised of components very high boiling or combustion points such as stainless steel, glass wool, glass, and aluminum. The manifold outlet is usually fitted with a temperature relief valve, which will prevent the manifold temperature from exceeding 212oF.

10. Q. What steps are needed to maintain and clean the solar collector?
A. Usually, the system needs no maintenance. Usually, natural conditions such as wind and rainfall should clean the tubes. Of course, as stated above, the tubes are sometimes damaged and should be replaced. Fortunately, the tubes are inexpensive easy to install. At TJ's Radiant Heat and Solar Heating, we have a well trained and certified staff that specializes in such installations.
